Running Instructions for the '!Methods' Church Bell ringing program.
This Desktop program shows an animated set of Church bell ringers and
allows users to demonstrate bell ringing methods on any number of
bells from four to sixteen.
When the icon is loaded on to the icon bar, click <Menu> over it to see
3 options,
Info - displays a small window with program details
Help - displays this window with these running instructions
Quit - stops the program
To Start
Click the <Select> mouse button over the icon on the icon bar to see a
window with title 'Ringing methods' where you set up the running parameters
before starting; these are:
- the total number of bells to use,
- whether the one with the lowest note is a 'cover' tenor,
- the method to be rung,
- the key of the tenor,
- the volume of the sound,
- the length of the 'open lead' gap,
- the strike rate.
These are saved in a file from one run to the next.
'Total no. of bells' allows you to change the number of bells to be rung;
click <Select> on the 'up' or 'down' arrows
or <Adjust> will change the number the other way.
A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 16 bells is allowed by the program.
With 4 bells the animated display is much degraded. Four-bell methods will
look better if displayed on 5 bells with a cover tenor (see next item). The
maximum number of bells depends on the stored methods and also on the number
of pixels across the screen since the images are set 64 pixels apart.
mode screen width max number of bells
27 640 10
31 800 12
1024 16 (absolute maximum).
If the tenor is 'covering' it always rings last and does not take part in
the method. Selecting this reduces the number of changing bells by one
and hence the methods available (see next line).
Choose a method from the menu opened when you click on the icon next to the
word 'Method'; this method should then appear in the box below. The menu of
methods depends on the number of bells you have selected and whether you
have a covering tenor.
Changing the key of the Tenor:
click on the icon next to the comment 'Tenor Key' to see the range of
possible keys expressed in musical notation. Select the one you want which
should then appear in the small icon to the left. (See file 'Docs.Pitch'
for how to make minor adjustments to the pitch which varies a little
depending on your computer.)
Click on the arrow icons next to the 'Volume' icon to change the volume
of the sound (Maximum 15, Minimum 0 ) Asking for zero volume will cause
a warning message 'The bells are silent with volume=0'; this can be
useful if you are checking your method and do not want to annoy others
around you who are working on different methods.
Click on the button towards the bottom of the window labelled 'Try Tenor' to
hear the sound.
Click on the arrow icons next to the 'Open lead' icon to change the pause
before each hand stroke. Values from 0 to 2 in steps of 0.2 are allowed.
The standard open lead has a value of 1 meaning there will be pause of
one blow before the handstroke. Closed leads have a value of 0.
Click on the arrow icons next to the 'Strike rate' icon to change the speed
of ringing. A strike rate of 30 means that about 30 6-bell rounds are rung
in one minute. For 12 bells the rate automatically reduces to about 25 per
minute. In normal ringing this value may vary from about 25 to 35. Values
outside this range (down to 5 and up to 60) are allowed for special effects;
the icon is coloured red below the 'normal' range and green above it.
Learning ropesight is easier with a slower rate.
Click on 'Save Diagram' to open a window allowing you to save the changes to
a Draw file. Besides the icons which normally appear in a 'save' window
there are options for drawing a red line following bell 1, a blue line
following any other bell of your choice and indicating which line
corresponds to handstroke and which to backstroke (see docs.strokes).
You may want to keep a window with the diagram open for reference to the
left of your screen. See Docs.Diagrams for an explanation of these
ringing diagrams.
Click on the 'Look To' icon to start the animation.
This takes place in a special ringing window which cannot be moved; it takes
all the Wimp time so that the ringing speed is not affected by other Wimp
activities which might be taking place. The mouse movement is confined to
the part of the window in which you can click.
Instructions telling you how to start and stop the method are at the bottom
of the green ringing window. There are two lines of 'Calls' you can make by
clicking on the black words, greyed out ones are either not used in this
method, or should not be called at this time.
At the top of the window you see your ringers ready to start ringing
rounds; they start doing this a second after this ringing window is set
up. They ring one round (two strokes) before you can start the method. This
simulates the time needed in a tower for the ringers to correct their
striking. The ringing order is shown in the small scrolling window at
bottom right; the number appears as the bell sounds.
Click over the "Go xxx" (where xxx is the method) to start the animation of
your selected method. You can pause the ringing at any time by pressing the
'P' key; to continue ringing press the 'C'.
The method repeats until you click on "That's All" to return to rounds or
"Stand" to stop the ringing. When all the graphics and sound have stopped
you can click on the 'Close' icon in this ringing window.
The "Erin" and "Cloisters" methods on more than 5 bells are special in that
"Bob" or "Single" may be called and take effect on the first change of the
method. For these you can start the method either by clicking over "Go xxx"
or over "Bob" or over "Single".
Press <Escape> in an emergency and the ringing window will immediately
disappear.
